SURAT: Taking serious note of undetected crime incidents and to accelerate the process of crime detection, Surat police has initiated computerisation of crime records.
The process entails feeding all important crime data including past incidents, history-sheeters, area-wise crime records and even modus operandi adopted by criminals.
Additional police commissioner Vikas Sahay maintained that clearing the backlog of all data is an herculean task for the department.

According to Sahay, the computerisation process would focus on three major areas namely vehicle thefts, details of arrests and modus operandi of criminals.
Computer profile of all those who have been arrested would be created. Once the data bank is ready, one click would generate antecedents of the accused.
This would help in tracking down an accused after an incident," Sahay said. More than 3000 modus operandi cards will be fed into the computer data bank.
"Feeding criminal records of property offenders is one of the most crucial links in detecting burglaries and house break-ins. In most cases we have realised that the criminal is habitual offender. The modus operandi cards once fed will give complete picture of an offender."
Instructions have been given to the computer department to take up the job seriously.
